(The fall)

In his collection of writings on art, Autoportrait au visage absent, thus entitled in reference to Ernst Mach drawing Self-portrait without a mirror, Jean Clair writes:
“This self-portrait with no head, this acephalous portrait, is the most common immediate self-experience that we could imagine, since it is the image of us that we have at any moment. (…) This “unsaveable”, scattered, vanished representation of myself, how can I apprehend it? We do not hear ourselves talk, we do not see ourselves walk. Can we see ourselves seeing ourselves?”

Nel suo libro di scritti sull'Arte, Autoportrait au visage absent, così intitolato in riferimento al disegno di Ernst Mach Autoritratto senza specchio, Jean Clair scrive:
“Questo autoritratto senza testa, questo ritratto acefalo, è l‘esperienza immediata di sé, la più comune che si possa immaginare, poiché è l’immagine che abbiamo di noi ad ogni instante. (...) Di questo io “insalvabile”, sparpagliato, volatilizzato, che ne posso capire? Nessuno si ascolta parlare, si vede camminare. Si può vedersi vedere?”

Dans son recueil d’écrits sur l’art, Autoportrait au visage absent, ainsi intitulé en référence au dessin d’Ernst Mach Autoportrait sans miroir, Jean Clair écrit :
« Cet autoportrait sans tête, ce portrait acéphale, c’est l’expérience de soi immédiate la plus commune que nous puissions imaginer, puisque c’est l’image que nous avons à chaque instant de nous. (...) Ce moi « insauvable », éparpillé, volatilisé, qu’en puis-je appréhender ? On ne s’entend pas parler, on ne se voit pas marcher. Peut-on se voir se voir ? »
